Civil engineers plan, design, develop and manage projects for the construction or repair of buildings, earth structures, powerhouses, roads, airports, railways, rapid transit facilities, bridges, tunnels, canals, dams, ports and coastal installations and systems related to highway and transportation services, water distribution and sanitation. Education

A four-year bachelor’s degree in civil engineering is required to do this work. Some organizations may require a master's degree, which would likely take an additional two-three years to earn. The more education you have, the more marketable you are!

Future Outlook

Employment of civil engineers is projected to grow 2 percent from 2019 to 2029, slower than the average for all occupations. As current U.S. infrastructure experiences growing obsolescence, civil engineers will be needed to manage projects to rebuild, repair, and upgrade bridges, roads, levees, dams, airports, buildings, and other structures.

Work Environment

Civil engineers typically work for engineering and construction firms and the government. Some engineers may spend some time outside monitoring their projects.
