Career Overview

Power engineers operate and maintain the systems that produce and manage heat, electricity, and other essential utilities. They work with turbines, boilers, generators, engines, and automated control systems, using modern technology to keep buildings, hospitals, factories, and energy facilities running safely and efficiently.

Education

Education requirements vary by location and by the type of power system. Many power engineering roles involve technical college or apprenticeship training, followed by workplace experience and certification. Strong preparation in math, science, technology, and mechanical systems can be helpful.

Work Environment

Power engineers can work in power plants, hospitals, manufacturing facilities, universities, commercial buildings, and other large facilities. The work combines hands-on equipment with computerized monitoring and automated control systems. Some facilities operate around the clock, so shift work may be part of the job.

Future Outlook

Power engineers will continue to play an important role as energy systems become more automated, efficient, and technology-driven. Modern facilities increasingly use computerized controls, sensors, automation, and real-time monitoring to manage complex power and utility systems.   • Chemistry - Knowledge of the chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
  • Computers and Electronics - Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming.
  • Design - Knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of precision technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Engineering and Technology - Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of various goods and services.
  • English Language - Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.

  • Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Physics - Knowledge and prediction of physical principles, laws, their interrelationships, and applications to understanding fluid, material, and atmospheric dynamics, and mechanical, electrical, atomic and sub- atomic structures and processes.
  • Public Safety and Security - Knowledge of relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or national security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions.
