Career Overview

Cabinetmakers build, repair, finish, and install cabinets, furniture, fixtures, and other wood products using hand tools, power tools, and computerized machinery. Modern cabinetmaking combines traditional craftsmanship with CNC machines, computer-aided design (CAD), precision measuring, and digital manufacturing technology.

Education

A high school diploma is a good starting point, followed by an apprenticeship or college-level training in cabinetmaking and woodworking. In Canada, cabinetmaking is a Red Seal trade, and students can build their skills through hands-on training while learning woodworking equipment, design, measurements, materials, finishing, and installation.

Work Environment

Cabinetmakers work in woodworking shops, furniture and cabinet manufacturing facilities, construction settings, and sometimes directly in customers' homes or businesses. The work can be hands-on and physical, but today's shops may also use CNC machines, CAD software, automated cutting equipment, and other digital tools alongside traditional woodworking skills.

Future Outlook

There will continue to be opportunities for skilled cabinetmakers, particularly for people who can combine craftsmanship with modern manufacturing and design skills. Automation is changing how some wood products are made, but people are still needed to design, program, assemble, install, customize, and finish high-quality work, and experienced cabinetmakers can also move into specialized or self-employed work.

  • Multilimb Coordination - The ability to coordinate two or more limbs (for example, two arms, two legs, or one leg and one arm) while sitting, standing, or lying down. It does not involve performing the activities while the whole body is in motion.
  • Near Vision - The ability to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
  • Oral Comprehension - The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences.
  • Oral Expression - The ability to communicate information and ideas in speaking so others will understand.
  • Perceptual Speed - The ability to quickly and accurately compare similarities and differences among sets of letters, numbers, objects, pictures, or patterns. The things to be compared may be presented at the same time or one after the other. This ability also includes comparing a presented object with a remembered object.
  • Problem Sensitivity - The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Reaction Time - The ability to quickly respond (with the hand, finger, or foot) to a signal (sound, light, picture) when it appears.
  • Response Orientation - The ability to choose quickly between two or more movements in response to two or more different signals (lights, sounds, pictures). It includes the speed with which the correct response is started with the hand, foot, or other body part.
  • Selective Attention - The ability to concentrate on a task over a period of time without being distracted.
  • Speech Recognition - The ability to identify and understand the speech of another person.
  • Static Strength - The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects.
