Recreation directors are often responsible for overseeing the daily operations of a recreational facility. They usually work for park and recreation centers, community centers, public parks, or other institutions that organize recreational activities. They create recreation programs. They manage staff and must make sure that they hire the right people for the right activities. They conduct performance evaluations in a timely manner. Depending on what programs and services are provided, they may be required to have artistic or athletic knowledge.
Employers often require that recreation directors have a bachelor’s degree in recreation administration, physical education, or other relevant fields. Some employers require years of relevant experience. However, candidates who are certified in certain fields may be considered even though they do not have a college degree or experience.
