Career Overview

Employment counsellors offer assistance, advice and information to worker clients on all aspects of employment search and career planning. They also provide advice and information to employer clients regarding human resource and employment issues.

Education

People in this occupation require: a bachelor's degree or college diploma in employment counselling, career development or in a related field, such as human resources development, psychology, education or social services. A master's degree in counselling psychology or a related field such as educational psychology, developmental psychology or social work (may be required), and make a person even more employable.

Future Outlook

Employment of school and career counselors is projected to grow 8 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations.

Work Environment

Career counselors work in colleges, career centers, and private practices. Both types of counselors generally work full time.
