Career Overview

Veterinarians care for the health of animals and work to protect public health.

Education

A doctorate in veterinary medicine is required to obtain this position. Typically, a veterinary program takes four-five years to complete. Most people already have a four-year bachelor’s degree before entering a veterinary program, although this isn’t always necessary. Some students may complete a number of pre-veterinary courses, then enroll in the veterinary medicine program.

Future Outlook

Employment of veterinarians is projected to grow 16 percent from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. Increases in consumers’ pet-related spending are expected to drive employment in the veterinary services industry, which employs most veterinarians.

Work Environment

Most veterinarians work in private clinics and hospitals. Others travel to farms or work in settings such as laboratories, classrooms, or zoos.
